Daily Buddhist Thoughts

Thought for Thu, 21 Aug 2008

Of little importance is the loss of such things as wealth. But a terrible thing is to lose wisdom. Of little importance is the gaining of such things as wealth. Great is the importance of gaining wisdom. - Buddha...

About Me:
Most importantly, I am a husband, father, brother, son, and time-wise in that order. My passion and field of expertise is in web technology, and I currently work as the Director of Interactive for a Silicon Valley based agency.

This site was created through the inspiration of the book Buddha or Bust where I was introduced to some of the Buddha's teachings and the idea of socially engaged Buddhism. The goal of this site is to bridge our interconnectedness using the web in hopes that the sharing of knowledge and ideas will facilitate changes in the world.

Ryan, I hope this finds you happy and well. I don't really subscribe to the traditional "teacher/student" relationship because I believe a teacher will at times become a student and a student will at times become a teacher.

In other words, our practice of the Dharma exists in the "present moment" and our understanding of it is never stagnant, but always maturing and developing as Dharma gates are thrown open.

A discussion/forum could be created from the practices of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, which I've already uploaded as blog enteries, but I can't guarantee that I will always have the time to participate, so it would be important to have a couple of moderators with a basic knowledge of dialectics --- this way the discussion doesn't ramble off the path and into a ditch, so to speak.

Neutrality is also important because the equanimity of the Bodhisattva spirit means that one does not forsake the Mahayana or the Theravada for one or the other, nor should one be considered greater than the other. Such distinctions do not exist with proper practice, especially when the practice is grounded in the Paramitas.

Let me know what you think.

Hi Ryan, I do not know whether I have done this previously, but if I did; kindly bear with me. I simply wish to express my gratitude for your effort to have put this site at our disposal. I think it is great to have a site where we as Buddhist can interact with one another over the net on a daily basis. Engaged Buddhism is already starting to feel like my net home.

Thank you very much

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for asking and no I haven't had too much luck finding other socially engaged buddhist organisations or buddhist NGOs in South America except for the one you told me about in Argentina. However I haven't had too much time to look lately because I've been busy doing volunteer work in El Salvador but I plan to get searching again soon and if you hear of any others that's be great to know.

Thanks a lot!

Dan

I'd like to but I'm not sure the agency will spring for it again. Especially since we hired an Interactive Creative Director in the meantime. I'm going to put in for it but we'll see. Now that we bought ourselves back from Havas, the agency might be a little less liberal with these sorts of conferences. I'll keep you posted.

HI Ryan,
It's been a crazy week, we're busy moving, and my univeristy studies are taking all my time right now. I promise to return that document to you soon, but please forgive the difficulty here. Things should calm down in a week or two.
