Engaged Buddhists

It has been a little over a year since I have given up eating red meat. The first month was very difficult, but I hardly think about it now. This year I've added pork "the other white meat" to this list. As I sat there with the slice of pork on my plate, I thought about the animal and the chain of events that led to it to be on my dinner plate. In those few moments, I saw the pain and felt the killing of the animal. It made me want to vomit. Namo Amitofo.

Hi Jenny,

I completely understand. For years, I ate hamburgers and steaks. The first month giving it up was the hardest, but at some point it became easier. For me it took really looking at the chain of events that lead up to what I was eating. Interestingly enough as I continue to explore these concepts, the urges disappeared. Again, I didn't go cold turkey. Last year was red meat, this year it's pork and hopefully something else next year. But there has to be some balance in me evolving my Buddhism for it to become a lasting effect.

Well... I tried several times to be a vegetarian but I can't I spend for example one day eating only fruits and vegetables, but then I see a hamburger for example and I can't resist, it's very hard to me to give up eating meat...But when I finish eating I feel guilty and irresponsable for eating a dead animal who was killed unfairly...well I'll keep trying to be a vegetarian... Namaste!
