I hope one day to be able to visit Lumbini and pay respects and also sit and do Jhana meditation next to the Bodhi tree at Bodhgaya too - i have leaf from the Bodhi tree and also Thai amulet with leaves taken from the bodhi tree of SammaSambuddho's enlightenment mixed in it.
Sabbe Sangkhara Aniccaa Sabbe Sangkhara Dukkhaa Sabbe Dhammaa Anattaa (dhi) - all conditioned things are impermanent, all conditioned things are unsatisfactory (and dukkha because of our clinging to them) and all dhammas (phenomena) are Anatta.. whay all dhammas instead of all sangkharas? because the state of Nibbana is also a dhamma, but Nibbana is not Aicca (impermanent) and not Dukkha (suffering) so that is why you cannot say "sabbe dhammaa dukkhaa" or "sabbe dhammaa Aniccaa" - because one dhamma of all dhammas is Nibbana, which is not entering into the classification of Impermanent (anicca) or unsatisfactory/suffering (Dukkha)
I wonder if anyone can follow this?
Dear Ven. Metteyya,
Thank you for your comment; I am not identifying myself as a 'vegan' these days as I have reintroduced into my diet some dairy. At a recent family gathering, the subject of vegetarianism came up and I was delighted to meet a new friend that was also vegetarian. Alas, one in the crowd asked me what I was wearing on my feet. Of course I knew where this was going and answered honestly (the person was blind) that I had on leather sandals. He then said 'so...you're a hypocrite too'. Of course that stung a little (my dharma lesson for that moment!!). My new friend then added, as she too has been put on the hot seat more than once about not eating meat, that the whole point is not so much to be a perfect vegetarian, but to just try. I have to agree - and this whole episode inspires me to look at how I am working with the first precept.....not to kill, not to condone any act of killing, etc.
Phew...long winded comment. Hope you are well and nice to meet you.
